There are few families more famous than the Kardashians. Jokingly referred to by some as “America’s royal family,” the Kardashians have spent over a decade sharing some of their most intimate moments with viewers worldwide. Everything from inside jokes to martial scandal has been laid bare.

As their hit show winds down for its final season, the family continues to draw attention. In a new clip, Khloé Kardashian mentions her possible inability to become pregnant again and begins to explore options with her sister.

Keeping Up With Khloé

Khloé Kardashian has been a household name since 2007 when she and the rest of her family rocketed to fame via Keeping Up With the Kardashians, a reality TV show following the ultrarich family’s dynastic success.

Khloé is known for her humor, smarts, honesty, and brash nature within the Kardashian family. She is also known as an entrepreneur, acting as one of the co-founders and owner of the designer line Good American. The LA native has also worked as an actress, model, and host of various TV programs including the X factor.

From 2009 to 2016, Khloé was married to former Los Angeles Lakers player Lamar Odom. Eventually, their rocky relationship ended, leading to Khloé’s partnership with current beau Tristan Thompson, a current center for the Boston Celtics. The two welcomed a daughter, True, in 2018. However, Thompson and Khloé’s relationship has not been without its own drama, Thompson having multiple accusations of infidelity. The couple separated for a time, but has recently reunited over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a recently released clip for the final season of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Khloé continued the tradition of allowing viewers an intimate look into her personal life. In conversation with her sister, Kim Kardashian West, Khloé discusses the potential of a “high risk” pregnancy and the possibility of surrogacy.

Khloé's Infertility Struggles

During their poolside chat, Khloé revealed to her sister that carrying another pregnancy herself may not be possible. “I spoke to Dr. A and she was just a little concerned,” she says. “She just said I would be a high risk carrier for a pregnancy.” In the clip, Khloé mentions that her chance of miscarriage would be around 80% and that there were times in her previous pregnancy, resulting in her daughter True, that a miscarriage seemed likely. In a solo interview, Khloé continues, saying, “This is all really shocking to me. All I'm trying to do is bring more love into my life and into my family, and I just seem to be running into more and more roadblocks. It's really hard for me to digest.”

While it was known that Khloé pursued fertility treatment in the past, a move she said was more for the benefit of her then-husband Lamar Odom than herself, this is the celeb’s first mention of her high risk status.

The two Kardashians continue their conversation, Kim taking the time to endorse the option of surrogacy. In fact, this is not the first time the eldest Kardashian daughter has encouraged others to try surrogacy. Maria Menounos, former host of E! News, previously mentioned that she was inspired to use a surrogate thanks to Kim’s advice. Whether Khloé will use a surrogate remains to be seen, but the fact is that discussing the option on the Kardashian’s hit tv show serves to introduce viewers across the globe to this increasingly common entrance to parenthood.

Facts About Surrogacy

Surrogacy is an agreement where a woman agrees to carry a child to term on behalf of another person or couple with the intention of transferring the infant to them upon birth. In the US, surrogacy laws range from state to state, some outlawing it entirely while others are considered surrogate friendly.

There are two types of surrogacy: traditional and gestational.

Traditional surrogacy describes when an embryo is conceived through artificial insemination using sperm donated by a parent or from a sperm bank as well as through the surrogate’s own ova. This type of surrogate will therefore be genetically related to the resulting baby.

Gestational surrogacy utilizes IVF technology so that, in the case of cisgendered heterosexual couples, the genetic material of both intended parents are used. The embryo is created using collected sperm and eggs in vitro before being implanted into the surrogate’s uterus. In this case, the surrogate will have no genetic relation to the infant.

Typically, surrogates are chosen by the intended parents via special agencies which conduct rigorous health screening and background checks or through family and friends. The former is often referred to as commercial surrogacy while the latter is known as altruistic surrogacy.

Most surrogacies are commercial and are considered a high dollar option. Surrogacy fees can easily rise into hundreds of thousands of dollars due to medical bills, background checks, agency fees, and compensation. For celebrities like the Kardashians, this may seem like pocket change, but for many this price makes considering surrogacy impossible.

For those struggling with infertility, surrogacy can be a hopeful, if expensive, option.

Why Use a Surrogate?

The reasons why a person or couple choose surrogacy can often be quite personal. In the case of Kim Kardashian West, who has used a surrogate twice, a medical condition known as placenta accreta made pregnancy and delivery a painful experience. Although she managed to carry both of her first two children, for the following two Kim felt surrogacy would be the less painful option. In the KUWTK clip, Kim reflected on her experiences with surrogacy positively, saying to Khloé, “...you'll see, the love that you'll have for your kids is exactly the same. There's no difference, except that there was someone else that was the carrier.”

Other reasons for using a surrogate are highly varied, including:

  • Infertility from either parent
  • Hysterectomies or other sterilization procedures
  • Medical conditions that make pregnancy dangerous
  • Same-sex couples who desire a biological child

Despite the many valid reasons an individual or couple may pursue surrogacy, the practice has a reputation of being at times shady or unethical.

Why is Surrogacy Controversial?

Although surrogacy is by no means a new phenomenon, it remains a topic of hot debate. Several nations have even made the practice illegal, claiming issues of ethicality.

In some cases, the concern stems from the fate of the child involved. In recent years, there have been several instances of infants being left by their intended parents. Others fear the exploitation of surrogate mothers with multiple examples of women seeking the position out of desperation and poverty. There is also the worry of intended parents reneging on contracts or refusing to pay if the surrogate miscarries.

With so many ethical questions and no international basis for legislation surrounding surrogacy, many activists are calling for lawmakers to find a way to make surrogacy legal and safe for everyone involved.

Hopefully, the Kardashian family’s continued interest and involvement in surrogacy will lead to greater discussion of the practice in America as well as abroad. Khloé has announced no concrete plans as of yet, but with any luck she will soon be welcoming a new baby in a way that is safest for her.
