For many couples, a miscarriage of a pregnancy can be the most devastating thing to happen, and it’s far more common than you think with up to 50% of pregnancies ending this way.
So common are miscarriages, in fact, that it’s no surprise that many celebrities also have gone through losing their baby in this traumatic way. However, the happy endings of some famous couples provide a hopeful example for those who may be struggling with fertility.
Nick and Lauren Carter are one such example.
Nick Carter and his wife Lauren Kitt Carter have a baby on the way, and so their family of four will grow to a family of five with their third child.
Nick is the youngest member of the popular band Backstreet Boys and has also had a successful solo career while Lauren is a former YouTuber and a star on reality television. The two were introduced by Nick’s siblings Aaron and Angel, who believed that they would be a perfect match.
It turns out that they were right! The two spoke for hours that night on the balcony, and Nick has said that they saw shooting stars, which they both saw as a sign.
Nick decided to propose while he was on tour in Australia, and he called her father to ask for his blessing from there. He had a diamond from a necklace of Lauren’s set into a ring and proposed to her after taking her for vacation on a private island.
The two were married in April 2014 after dating for six years and have been together ever since. However, they’ve had their fair share of challenges and obstacles to overcome.
She had another miscarriage after giving birth to Odin when she was six months into her pregnancy. Lauren posted an ultrasound photo on the day she had been due to give birth along with a heartfelt caption.
“I thought I’d share with you all an often shameful subject that we as Women and Parents suffer in silence,” Lauren wrote. “I accept circumstances out of our control and I’ve moved on from my losses, days like today remind me just how fortunate I am to have a healthy child.”
Lauren had previously kept silent about this experience and other miscarriages since they were very traumatic for her and seen as taboo to talk about, but seeing other people be open about their stories has encouraged her to do the same.
Nick and Lauren announced another pregnancy in May 2019, and welcomed a second healthy child into the world on October 2nd, 2019— Saoirse Carter.
After giving birth to their second child, Lauren Carter thought that she wouldn’t be able to have any more children and had accepted that. As a result, she didn’t realize that she was expecting a third child until she was almost six months into the pregnancy.
“I didn't have any symptoms, I didn't have anything indicating that I was pregnant,” Lauren said. “One day I just — I felt something move in my body and I said, ‘Nick, there's something not right. I think I need to go to the doctor. Something's wrong with me.’”
It never occurred to either of them that Lauren could be pregnant again, and Lauren actually thought that it was a tumor. The two went to the doctor expecting bad news only to get amazing news that they never expected!
Nick and Lauren Carter had always wanted a big family, and they felt incredibly lucky and blessed by the two healthy children they had despite the difficulties.
However, according to Lauren they had actually been discussing the idea of a surrogate only a few weeks before she found out she was pregnant again— so a third child on the way was definitely a welcome surprise!
Lauren has had three miscarriages in the past, and she’s stated that it feels as if all of the children she lost have come back to her. Nick has said that especially with everything going on in the past year— a time during which he has really focused on family and his kids —it feels like a miracle.
“I have always wanted to love somebody, someone unconditionally and give everything to those people, my wife, my kids, and be selfless,” he adds. “Now that I have it, yes, I am living my dream and I am very grateful for that and very blessed.”
Expecting a baby during a global pandemic can’t be easy, but neither has the Carters’ experiences with pregnancy in the past.
The family of four, soon to be a family of five, are all incredibly happy with this news, and are excited to bring a third child into the world. Even after going through something as traumatic as not one but multiple miscarriages and Lauren expecting to never be able to be pregnant again, that’s exactly what happened.
So, the Carters are still incredibly hopeful and looking towards the future and all that it may bring.
