Zinc Supplements Fail to Enhance Male Fertility

Zinc, a supplement that for years was known to help improve overall male fertility with increasing sperm count, and sperm potency, has been proven to have failed in a new study. Researchers have found that the so-called fertility supplement can have a negative effect on men when it and that it does not improve pregnancy outcomes.

How Has the Study Debunked the Myth That Zinc Improves Fertility?

Researchers have proven in a recent study that zinc supplements actually do not help when it comes to enhancing male fertility. The dietary supplements have been deemed as ineffective in a recent study where researchers brought in 2,370 couples planning to undergo infertility treatments in Salt Lake City, Utah. Men were randomly assigned whether they would take 20 milligrams of zinc supplements and 5 milligrams of folic acid supplements , or a placebo for six months and they would test if the supplements helped with fertility, or not.

After six months of taking the supplements, or placebo and taking track of pregnancy outcomes, researchers found no difference between the two groups. For men that took the supplements, there were 404 births, or a 34% outcome for pregnancy, and for the placebo group, there were 416 births and a 35% outcome for pregnancy. The men in both groups had the were measured and for similar sperm count, mobility and shape. Men who took the zinc and folic acid supplements had a higher proportion of broken DNA in sperm than the men in the placebo group. Men who took the supplements also experienced abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting as well.

What Are Other Alternatives to Improve Male Fertility?

There are many alternatives to taking zinc supplements for men if they are trying to improve their fertility. Some of the easiest ways to improve fertility are staying cool, limiting your alcohol consumption, maintaining a healthy weight, and to stay active. Doctors also recommend looking out for harmful toxins such as pesticides and to refrain from smoking.  

If you’re looking for other alternatives from zinc supplements, consider D-Aspartic Acid, or Vitamin C supplements.

If a male is looking to take supplements to improve fertility, there are many that doctors recommend. One is D-Aspartic Acid, which is a type of amino acid that is sold as a dietary supplement. D-AA is present in the testicles, as well as sperm and sperm cells. Doctors also recommend using vitamin C supplements to keep those levels up as well.
